You can pay for calls overseas in four ways. Each way suits a different caller.
Plan inclusions
Many mobile phone plans include unlimited standard international calls to a list of 20 to 42 countries. Calls to other countries cost extra.
Best for: long calls to one included country.
International calling packs
Add a pack to the plan you have. Packs cost $5 to $30. Each one gives unlimited calls or a set number of call minutes.
Best for: Telstra, Optus and Vodafone customers who call a lot.
Pay-as-you-go call rates
With no inclusions, your telco charges a rate per minute. Some also charge a fee for each call.

Prices are the ongoing price. Many providers cut the price for the first months. Unlimited means standard voice calls to standard numbers in the selected destinations, for personal use. The country lists are on each provider's website. Plans also include unlimited standard national calls and texts.

Unused minutes do not roll over. ALDImobile, amaysim, TPG and Boost do not sell calling packs. Their plans include international calls instead.

The three big telcos each group countries into zones. Your plan and your pack decide which zone you get.
Telstra
Telstra says its Upfront plans include "30 minutes per month of standard international calls from Australia to all destinations". They also include unlimited standard international SMS and MMS. The plans start at $74 a month. Add the $10 Zone 1 pack for unlimited calls to 23 countries.

The $70 Medium Choice Plus plan includes unlimited standard international talk and text to 35 countries. On prepaid, the $54 Flex Plus recharge includes unlimited calls to 36 Zone 1 countries. Optus also sells $10 and $20 add-ons for other countries.

When a Phone Card Costs Less Than a Plan
A phone card costs less when you call a country that your plan does not include, or when you talk for only a few hours a month.
- Countries outside the plan lists. No plan or pack we checked gives unlimited calls to Sri Lanka or Fiji. Our cards call Fiji mobiles from 36.0c a minute.
- A few hours a month. To call USA mobiles, the Easy Calling card costs 1.9c a minute. The $10 Telstra Zone 1 pack only costs less if you talk for more than about 520 minutes a month.
- No plan change. A phone card works with the mobile or landline you have now. You keep your plan and your number.
When a plan or pack costs less
Check your own numbers. If you talk for hours each week to one included country, a plan or pack can win. To UK mobiles, our cheapest rate on cards with no connection fee is 9.8c a minute. So a $10 pack with unlimited UK calls costs less after about 100 minutes a month. To India, the pack costs less after about 350 minutes.
International Calls and International Roaming
An international calling plan covers calls you make from Australia. It does not cover your phone when you travel.
When you are overseas, your telco charges international roaming. For that, buy a roaming pack from your telco, or use a local SIM card in the country you visit.
How to Make International Calls from Australia
Dial the exit code, then the country code, then the number.
- Dial 0011 or +. This is the exit code for calling overseas from Australia.
- Dial the country code, for example 1 for the USA or 44 for the UK.
- Dial the local number. Drop the first 0 of the area code or mobile number.

What is the cheapest way to make international calls from Australia?
It depends on the country and how long you talk. For a few hours a month to one country, a prepaid phone card is often the cheapest. For example, our cards call USA landlines from 1.9c a minute. If you talk for many hours to a country that a plan includes, a plan or a $10 pack can cost less.
What is the best mobile plan for international calls?
The best plan is the cheapest one that includes the country you call. On 22 October 2026, the cheapest plan with unlimited international calls was the ALDImobile $28 Mobile Plan, at $28 for 30 days. It covers 20 countries.
Which Australian SIM card is best for international calls?
Look for a SIM plan whose country list includes the people you call. Of the plans we checked, only amaysim plans include unlimited calls to the Philippines. No plan we checked includes unlimited calls to Fiji, so a phone card is the cheaper choice there.
