When a Connection Fee Pays Off
Some cards charge a fee each time a call connects, usually between 39c and 99c, and give a lower rate per minute in return. On short calls the fee costs more than it saves. On long calls the lower rate wins. This table shows the call length where the card with a fee becomes cheaper.
| Calling | No connection fee | With a connection fee | Fee card is cheaper after |
|---|---|---|---|
| USA | 1.9c/min Easy Calling | 1.4c/min + 49c a call, Ring Me | about 98 minutes |
| China | 2.4c/min Day to Day | 1.3c/min + 49c a call, Ring Me | about 45 minutes |
| Philippines | 13.3c/min Mabuhay Pinoy | 9.4c/min + 89c a call, Mr Calls | about 23 minutes |
| Vietnam | 5.8c/min Asian Connection | 3.5c/min + 89c a call, Mr Calls | about 39 minutes |
If most of your calls are short check-ins, choose a card with no connection fee. If you talk for an hour every week, a card with a fee and a lower rate can save you money.
How to Pick the Cheapest Card for Your Calls
Five things decide what a call really costs you. Check them on the card page before you buy.
Landline or mobile
Look at the rate for the type of phone you call. Calls to mobiles often cost more. A UK landline costs 3.2c a minute and a UK mobile costs 9.8c.
Connection fee
See if the card says "No connection fee" or lists a fee per call. A fee is added to every call, even one that lasts a minute.
Billing increment
Cards bill in blocks of 1, 2, 3 or 4 minutes. With 3 minute blocks, a 4 minute call is billed as 6 minutes. For many short calls, choose 1 or 2 minute blocks.
Access number
Find a local access number in your city on the local access page. The rates shown are for the local number. The 1300 and 1800 numbers add a few cents a minute.
Bonus credit
Larger cards often add free credit. The $50 Day to Day card gives you $55 of calls, and the $30 India Call card gives you $33.

- Call from a local access number. On most cards the 1300 number adds 5c a minute and the 1800 number adds 9c a minute.
- Buy the size with bonus credit. Check the card page for the amount that adds free calls.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest way to make international calls from Australia?
A prepaid phone card matched to the country you call. You dial a local access number from your mobile or landline, then the overseas number. On cards with no connection fee, rates start at 1.9c a minute to the USA and 2.8c a minute to India. Some cards add a fee to each call.
How much does an international call from Australia cost with a phone card?
It depends on the country and whether you call a landline or a mobile. A 20 minute call to a landline in India costs about 56c on the India Call Phone Card, and a 20 minute call to a landline in the Philippines costs about $2.66 on Mabuhay Pinoy.
Which countries can I call?
More than 200 countries. Our cards call landlines and mobiles across Asia, Europe, Africa, the Americas, the Middle East and the Pacific. Pick your country on our home page to see every card that calls it and its rate.
Which phone card is the cheapest?
There is no single cheapest card. Each card has its own rate for each country, so the cheapest card for India can cost more for the UK. Use the rate table on this page or the rate finder on our home page to see the cheapest card for your country.
Can I use a phone card from my mobile?
Yes. Dial the card's local access number from your mobile. The call to that number is a normal national call, so if your plan includes unlimited national calls, that part costs you nothing extra.
Do I or my family need the internet or an app?
No. Phone cards work over normal phone lines. The person you call can answer on any landline or mobile, with no app and no data.
How fast do I get my PIN?
We email your PIN and access numbers straight away when you pay with an Australian credit card or PayPal. Other payment methods usually take a few hours.
Do phone cards expire?
Our cards expire 6 months after you first use them or last recharge them. Every recharge starts the 6 months again.
